Ryerson University in Toronto, Ont. says it will not “restore or replace” a statue of Egerton Ryerson that was pulled down by demonstrators on Sunday evening.
The statue has long been a flash point of controversy over the educator’s influential role in designing Canada’s residential school system.
It has become the subject of renewed demonstrations in recent day, however, after the remains of 215 Indigenous children were discovered at unmarked burial sites at a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C.
Global News’ Shallima Maharaj has more on mounting calls for Ryerson University to part ways with its namesake.
