Canadian Defence Minister Anita Anand said on Thursday that Canadian forces are now training the Ukrainian military on M777 howitzer weapons that were sent to the Eastern European country last week.
Anand made the comments during a joint press conference with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin in Washington, D.C.
The defence minister also reiterated Canada’s pledge from Tuesday during a conference at Germany’s Ramstein Air Base that it would send eight armoured vehicles to Ukraine in the coming weeks.
During the same press conference, Austin said U.S. President Joe Biden has requested $16 billion from Congress to “address Ukraine’s self-defence needs in the crucial weeks ahead.”
