Defence Minister Anita Anand announced on Thursday that up to 225 Canadian Armed Forces personnel would begin deploying this month to the United Kingdom, where they would train new Ukrainian recruits. The training mission will last for four months.

The move comes nearly six months after Canada suspended its previous training mission in Ukraine, just weeks before Russian forces invaded the country.

That includes training Ukrainian forces on how to use the four M777 howitzers that Canada donated earlier this year, as well as cyber assistance through Canada’s electronic spy agency, the Communications Security Establishment.

Anand also announced that an agreement had been reached to supply Ukraine with 39 armoured combat support vehicles, and they would begin shipping to Europe later this month.

The vehicles had been promised by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during this summer's NATO summit, however Anand said the agreement had recently been "achieved." The vehicles will also be supplied with state-of-the-art armour, machine guns and ammunition.
