Health Minister Patty Hajdu said Thursday the Canadian federal government would invest $4 million on an Indigenous-led consortium created to educate health professionals on Indigenous issues, and create access to care that is free of discrimination.
The minister’s comments came following a two-day virtual meeting with other ministers and representatives from provincial and territorial health counterparts and First Nations, Inuit and the Métis Nation.
Indigenous Affairs Minister Marc Miller also addressed Canada’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Indigenous communities, stating that it has provided government at all levels with the opportunity to “test” its commitment to providing culturally sensitive health care.
He also said the government needs to “learn some lessons” as it moves forward with the vaccine rollout about the way it has deployed assets to harder-to-reach Indigenous communities.
