The federal government announced an extension of the travel ban on flights coming from India and Pakistan as both countries continue to deal with high levels of COVID-19 infections.
“On April 22, Transport Canada issued a notice to ban direct, commercial and private passenger flights from India and Pakistan for 30 days based on public health advice to reduce the importation risk of COVID-19 and its variants. We’re now extending this measure through June 21,” Transportation Minister Omar Alghabra said.
The announcement came as Health Canada warned of potential consequences of gathering during the upcoming long weekend.
Dr. Howard Njoo, deputy chief public health officer, said despite the steady decline of COVID-19 activity nationally, people need to continue to take precautions to sustain the progress already made.
This week, Canada has seen a 10 per cent decrease in the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations compared to the week before.
The government says nearly 58 per cent of adult Canadians have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. A total of 25 million vaccine doses will be distributed to provinces and territories this coming weekend.
