Environment and Climate Change Canada held a media availability to provide updated information about Hurricane Lee on Thursday.

Hurricane Lee is expected to become a powerful post-tropical storm on Saturday when it makes landfall on Canada's East Coast. Residents in western Nova Scotia and southern New Brunswick are being told to prepare for power outages and flooding.

"We've seen the storm accelerate here over the last day or so. It is now moving northward, [and] that anticipated north turn has occurred. And it's moving north now at about 22 kilometres per hour. And that would bring it into our response zone on Friday, again, most likely as a hurricane," Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Bob Robichaud said.

The Canadian Hurricane Centre in Halifax is stressing that the storm will maintain much of its strength when it reaches the region. Lee was 430 kilometres southwest of Bermuda earlier today as a Category 2 hurricane, churning out sustained winds of 155 kilometres per hour.
