Canada's top soldier is warning of significant impacts ahead for the armed forces, as the federal government looks to slash almost $1 billion in funding from the Department of National Defence.

The move is part of a wider Liberal campaign to find $15 billion in federal spending savings, but some critics see the defence cuts as an unnecessary measure at an inopportune time.

“You know, our people see the degrading, declining security situation around the world. And so trying to explain this to them is very difficult,” Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Wayne Eyre says.
