In Ottawa, a shake-up at the highest ranks of the Canadian military. Lt.-Gen. Frances J. Allen has been appointed vice chief of the defence staff; the first woman to get that job. She takes on the role at a time when the Armed Forces is in crisis. The behaviour of two top military leaders is under investigation - former chief of the defence staff Gen. Jonathan Vance and his successor Adm. Art McDonald. And it’s going to take a lot more than one woman to fix the military’s deep-rooted problems. Mike Le Couteur has our top story.

Allen has served as Canada’s military representative to the NATO military council since July 2020. She has a long career in the military and has held numerous leadership roles including as deputy vice chief of the defence staff and as director general of the military’s cyberspace division.
