Residents in Blumenau gathered for a candlelight vigil on Wednesday to mourn the children killed in an axe attack in a daycare in southern Brazil.

Family and friends of the victims and survivors prayed, left flowers, and lit candles outside the school on Wednesday night.

A man armed with a small axe climbed over a wall into a daycare in the city of Blumenau in the state of Santa Catarina and killed four children, police said, injuring five others in the attack.

Police said three boys – two aged four and one aged five – and one girl aged seven were killed.

Four of the injured children between the ages of three to five were being treated in a hospital and were reported in stable condition, while a fifth child had minor injuries, police said.

The 25-year-old man turned himself in to the police after the rampage. The attacker had a history of violence and drugs and had stabbed his stepfather in March 2021, police said.
