U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged Hamas to swiftly accept Israel's latest and "extraordinarily generous" proposal for a Gaza truce to secure a release of hostages, at a special meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) held in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Monday.

During one of the panel sessions, Egypt's Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said that it was vital to first stop the “unhuman attacks on Gaza,” before working towards a long-term goal of a two-state solution. Meanwhile, Jordan’s Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh said that a military operation in Rafah would be “catastrophic” but that it was “not the epicentre of the issue.”

In Washington, D.C., White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that U.S. President Joe Biden will speak with the leaders of Qatar and Egypt that day as he pushes for a deal aimed at a Gaza ceasefire and the release of some hostages held by Hamas militants.

In Rafah, Palestinian Umm Fayez Abu Taha said that all she was asking from the world was for compassion and to “just end the war.” In Tel Aviv, the daughter of an American-Israeli hostage demanded that leaders “stop the talking and start the action,” and that she knew “a deal is possible.”
