A Vancouver woman who was brutally attacked in Mexico recently is recovering from surgery from her injuries in B.C. and says she is "so thankful" to be home.

What was supposed to be a relaxing trip turned out to be a nightmare in Playa del Carmen earlier this month when Jamie Coutts says she was assaulted outside a bar while trying to get a man to leave her friend alone. Peter Nowaczek, a professional boxer from Toronto, has since been charged with attempted murder, according to the Quintana Roo Attorney General's Office.

In addition to a long road to recovery, Coutts said she's dealing with financial stress as well as she's on the hook for medical bills in Mexico, as she didn't have travel insurance. She will also have to pay for cosmetic reconstructive surgery, and pay a lawyer as she works through legal aspects of her case.

It's not the first time Coutts has been in the news, as Global News reported on an incident earlier this year involving the young woman. She spoke to Global News in March about a frightening experience after she was stalked by a strange man for more than half an hour in Vancouver.

Emad Agahi reports.
