PGA golfer Tiger Woods is recovering in hospital following emergency surgery overnight, after his vehicle rolled over on Tuesday in California.

According to the statement released by his team on Wednesday, Woods was awake, stable and responsive following a "long surgical procedure" on his lower right leg and ankle. During the surgery, doctors had to insert a rod into his tibia and stabilize his foot and ankle with screws and pins.

Authorities said on Tuesday that they had to pull Woods out of his vehicle through the front windshield. Police said there was no evidence he was impaired. Danya Bacchus reports.
