The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department on Wednesday released the findings of its investigation into the single vehicle crash involving golf star Tiger Woods in February. Sheriff Alex Villenueva said excessive speed was the cause behind the crash and said they found no indication of any impairment with Woods. Villenueva said the estimated speed of the first area of impact was between 84 to 87 miles per hour and was travelling approximately 75 miles per hour when his vehicle struck the tree.
Because there were no indicators of impairment, there wasn't any probable cause for obtaining a search warrant and conducting further tests according to police.
Woods was hurt early on Feb. 23 when the SUV he was driving on a downhill stretch of road struck a raised median in a coastal Los Angeles suburb, crossed into oncoming lanes and flipped several times. Authorities said he had to be pulled out through the windshield.
He had a lengthy surgery that day at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center for shattered tibia and fibula bones of his lower right leg in multiple locations. Those were stabilized with a rod in his tibia. Additional injuries to the bones in his foot and ankle required screws and pins.
Woods is currently recovering at his home in Florida.
