Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in his opening remarks at a question and answer session in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday that the federal government will help British Columbia with military personnel and resources amid catastrophic situations caused by flooding and mudslides.

Trudeau added that the federal government will help with cleanup and rebuilding.

Defence Minister Anita Anand has said the military is increasing air support to the province to help evacuate residents after transportation links have been cut off by floods.

Three military helicopters and a search-and-rescue aircraft were sent into the Fraser Valley earlier in the week.

According to the Royal Canadian Air Force, the aircraft and crew were able to evacuate a total of 311 people as well as 27 animals to safety in the city of Agassiz.
