A massive fire that broke out at a container depot in southeastern Bangladesh Saturday has killed more than 40 people and injured more than 150, officials said Sunday.
According to fire service officials, firefighters were still scrambling on Sunday to put out fires as chemical-filled containers were still exploding. The fire broke out at Sitakunda, about 40 kilometres from Chittagong. According to local residents, an explosion from the area shook the neighbourhood and shattered windows of nearby buildings.
Fire service officials said they suspect it may have originated from a container of hydrogen peroxide and spread quickly to other containers. However, it was not immediately clear the exact cause.
