Alberta policies on trans youth most anti-LGBTQ2 in Canada: Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau criticized Premier Danielle Smith and her government’s newly announced policies on transgender youth Friday, calling them the “most anti-LGBT policies anywhere in this country.”

Trudeau called on Smith to “fight with us to defend the rights of vulnerable Canadians.”

“Don’t fight against vulnerable LGBT youth,” he said and added that the federal government will protect and defend LBGTQ2 youth.

Alberta’s policies include requiring youth under age 16 to have parental consent before changing their name or gender. It also includes a ban on gender reassignment surgery for Albertans under age 18 and prohibitions on puberty blockers and hormone therapy for youth aged 15 and under.
