Canada's public health agency officials pleaded on Thursday for unvaccinated people to get their COVID-19 shots as they said data shows a fourth wave of the pandemic is underway in the country.
Deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo said during a press conference that the fourth wave is driven by unvaccinated people.
“The fourth wave is really being driven primarily by individuals who are unvaccinated’ it’s less than 1 per cent of the cases that have been reported to us who are vaccinated,” he told a press conference.
International Development Minister Kalina Gould was in attendance and announced that Canada will donate up to 10 million additional doses of the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccines — also known as the Janssen vaccine — internationally.
Some 82 per cent of Canadians have had at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, but with the more contagious Delta variant public health is considering a third vaccine dose for immunocompromised people .
Health Canada will be providing details on that, as well as vaccine passports for people who got mixed COVID-19 vaccines in the coming weeks.
