Canada’s federal Transportation Minister Omar Alghabra announced funding on Wednesday for technology and infrastructure improvements for air traffic control, and for four major Canadian airports.

Alghabra said the government would invest in three projects, the first of which would provide funding for technology such as “drone traffic management services” that will help aircraft “move more quickly between airports.

He said money would also be earmarked for technology and infrastructure improvements at Toronto’s Pearson Airport, Montréal–Trudeau International Airport, Vancouver International Airport and Calgary International Airport. The improvements will include new software to assist traffic controllers and enhance weather prediction and surveillance capability.

Lastly, funding will be spent on improving Canada’s airport transportation system in the event of extreme weather in remote communities.
