Shortly after Monday’s question period in the House of Commons where Conservatives repeatedly demanded the removal of Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei, whom Canada's spy agency alleged was involved in a plot to intimidate Conservative MP Michael Chong and his relatives in Hong Kong, the Liberal government declared Wei as persona non grata and is no longer welcome in Canada.

“The diplomat needs to go back to Beijing and it needs to happen now. Will they do it today?” Conservative MP Melissa Lantsman demanded during the debate.

Shortly after question period ended, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said in a statement that the "decision has been taken after careful consideration of all factors at play.”

The minister added other diplomats in Canada have been warned they will be sent home if they engage in acts of foreign interference.

The action comes after a week of calls by Chong and other Conservative MPs to expel Zhao, following a Globe and Mail report last Monday that alleged he was involved with Beijing’s intelligence service in targeting Chong and his family.
