Speaking during a parliamentary hearing on Canada-China relations on Monday, Liberal MP Jean Yip asked international business professor Ari Van Assche from HEC Montreal if he thinks retaliatory measures will follow Foreign Minister Melanie Joly’s announcement that Zhao Wei, a diplomat at the Chinese consulate in Toronto, has been declared “persona non grata” in Canada. Van Assche said that he was “sure” China will consider how to demonstrate their disappointment in the situation and guessed that there might be “some retaliation.”

Conservative MP Garnett Genuis interrogated senior vice president of B.C. Investment Management Corporation Daniel Garant, asking if his members would find it acceptable to invest “in a company that’s complicit in the Uyghur genocide” and saying “frankly, I don’t know how you sleep at night.” Parliamentary secretary to the minister of foreign affairs Robert Oliphant raised a point of order in response and called Genuis’ comments “unparliamentary.”

“What we're finding is that there is no place to hide because of the increasing level of diplomatic friction among some of the large markets that we invest in. It's something that we have to be very well aware of and go in with eyes wide open,” said Michel Leduc, a senior managing director at the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.

Canada’s expelling of Wei comes after a week of calls by Michael Chong and other Conservative MPs to expel Zhao, following a Globe and Mail report last Monday that alleged he was involved with Beijing’s intelligence service in targeting Chong and his family.
