Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that Russia’s calls for a ceasefire were “deceptive,” adding that they have continued to shell the city of Bakhmut in the eastern Donbas region.

Shellfire echoed Saturday on the near-deserted streets of Bakhmut, the current focus of the most intense fighting in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“They were saying something about the supposed ceasefire. The reality, however, was that Russian shells once again hit Bakhmut and other Ukrainian positions,” Zelenskyy said from the capital of Kyiv.

Putin ordered a 36-hour ceasefire on Friday for Christmas celebrations. Many Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on Jan. 7 but the Russian Orthodox Church’s backing of Moscow’s war in Ukraine has angered many Ukrainian Orthodox believers and splintered the worldwide Orthodox Church.
