At least 270 million people around the world - equivalent to the combined populations of Germany, Britain, France and Italy - stand on the brink of starvation.

That's according to the head of the United Nations' World Food Programme, David Beasley, as he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on Thursday (December 10) on behalf ot the organization.
