World Cup 2022: Morocco defeats Portugal as 1st African, Arab team to reach semifinals

Morocco delivered a seminal moment in the nearly 100-year history of soccer’s biggest tournament, beating Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portugal team 1-0 Saturday in another shocking result in the first World Cup staged in the Middle East.

Fans from Doha to Paris celebrated the historic moment, wrapped in Moroccan flags and lighting flares and fireworks while cheering together in crowds.

“Portugal played well. Well done to them, but we're stronger," Moroccan fan Wassim said. "I hope we win the World Cup, but it's going to be tight."

France also beat England 2-1 on Saturday, meaning that Morocco will play France in the semifinals on Wednesday.
