Wildfires have left a trail of scorched earth across the Mediterranean. Croatia, Portugal, Turkey and Spain's Canary Islands have all suffered. The worst death toll, however, is in Algeria, where fires have claimed at least 34 lives. Dozens of fires are also burning across southern Italy, including the island of Sicily where temperatures have exceeded 47 degrees Celsius. And new fires have broken out on mainland Greece, adding to those already burning for days on several islands. On Rhodes, thousands of people have been evacuated and forests and nature reserves destroyed.
