Wildfires in Canada disrupting tourism industry, tarnishing reputation

Ongoing wildfires across British Columbia and the Northwest Territories are dissuading tourists from visiting Canada this year, taking a massively negative toll on the industry during a peak season.

What this tarnished reputation means for the future of tourism across these provinces and territories remains to be seen.

But before mass tourism resumes in wildfire hotspots, the remnants of smog and destruction needs to become a thing of the past, experts suggest.

There needs to be healing among communities, rehoming for tens of thousands, rebuilding for businesses near and far, and in the case of many areas, a fresh start overall. Global’s Anne Gaviola reports.
