Amid mounting pressure from residents and an outcry from people worldwide, the Nigerian government announced on October 11 it was dissolving the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) within the Nigerian Police Force.

SARS was created in the early 1990s to combat criminal activity growing rampant across the country, however instead of helping to fight crime in Nigeria, SARS officers have been accused of inhumane torture and other acts against its citizens.

Now, the hashtag #EndSARS is being used online to bring awareness to the unjust treatment Nigerians have had to face for decades, and to hold SARS officers, and the Nigerian government, accountable for its actions.
