Nigeria marks 61 years of independence in shadow of #EndSARS | DW News

Nigeria marked 61 years of independence this week, but for many there is little to celebrate. That is because the problems in Africa's biggest democracy run deep. The opposition PDP governor of the southern Rivers State, Nyesom Wike put it this way: "At 61, Nigeria is in disarray, full of enmity, divisions, hatred, and ethnicity."
Around this time last year, young Nigerians mobilized in a way that had never been before seen. What began as a social media campaign #EndSARS saw young people march onto the streets calling for a notoriously brutal police unit to be dissolved. It later became a movement demanding broad social justice and reform. But it came to a brutal end when security forces fired live ammunition at unarmed civilians demonstrating at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos. Rights groups say 12 people were killed.
DW's Fred Muvunyi spoke to people in Lagos about how they feel one year after the start of EndSARS.
