The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a study looking into the prevalence of violence against women in countries around the world, which found one in three women experience physical violence at some point during their lives.

“The results paint a horrifying picture,” said WHO director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, outlining the troubling results of the study.

The study also found that one in four adolescent girls have been subjected to domestic violence before turning 19 years old.

Ghebreyesus said legal, social, economic and educational tools are needed to combat the problem.
