WHO Director-General warns of “catastrophic” famine and health crisis in Gaza, Sudan and West Bank

During a press conference on Wednesday, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned of critical health issues in Gaza, Sudan and the West Bank, as accessibility to food and medicine becomes increasingly scarce.

Despite a reported spike of aid deliveries in the Gaza Strip – amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict – Ghebreyesus said, “a significant proportion of Gaza's population is now facing catastrophic hunger and famine-like conditions… Over 8,000 children under 5 years old have been diagnosed and treated for acute malnutrition.”

Though a majority of Israel’s military operations have taken place in Gaza, the West Bank has not been spared from violence either, as noted by the WHO head. “Attacks on health care and restrictions on movement of people are obstructing access to health services. Since the war in Gaza started, 508 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank,” he said.

In Africa, the people of Sudan are dealing with not only a similar roadblock accessing health-care supplies and attention, but also a "very real risk of mass starvation" in some regions of the war-torn country, where conflict has made aid broadly unavailable.
