White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre briefed journalists, as Hurricane Idalia hits Florida in the early hours of Wednesday, putting 14 million people's lives at risk.

She will be joined by Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency Deanne Criswell.

Idalia has now been deemed a category two hurricane as its centre moves towards southern Georgia.
