A WestJet pilot strike is looming ahead of the May long weekend, as a strike of Swoop and WestJet pilots could happen as early as Tuesday. The union representing more than 1,000 WestJet pilots says the staff are underpaid and overworked, while the airline owned by private equity firm Onex claims the pilots are fairly compensated.

With many travellers making summer plans and flight demand surging post-pandemic, a pilot shortage that existed even before COVID-19 is now exacerbated by industry turbulence.

Experts warn that the public should brace for more pilot strikes in the coming year, with northern and remote locations being the ones that may be the most impacted.
