The federal government announced Monday nearly $6 billion financial support package for Air Canada, which includes billions of dollars to help the struggling airline rebuild from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The deal guarantees refunds for flights cancelled due to the pandemic, along with the restoration of regional routes that were previously suspended and job protection for the airline’s remaining employees.

The deputy prime minister said the deal doesn’t include taxpayers money, but rather loans to Air Canada, to be paid within five to seven years.

Mike Armstrong looks at what the deal means for Air Canada customers.

Also, Anne Gaviola discusses how the government chose to bail out Air Canada over other Canadian airlines. The government funding comes just as competition with international airlines is ramping up again, and the U.S. and countries in Europe have already aided their own airline companies to bounce back from the pandemic.
