For months, pharmaceutical companies have worked to develop COVID-19 vaccines for kids under age 5, said Dr. Payal Patel of the University of Michigan's Institute for Healthcare Policy & Innovation in a Nov. 12 live conversation with the PBS NewsHour's Nicole Ellis. Patel said she predicts the rollout will happen rapidly as the public saw with kids age 5-11. Children ages 5-11 are the latest group in the United States to be eligible for coronavirus vaccines, joining nearly a quarter billion people aged 12 and up who have had at least one dose so far. In the first week of availability, an estimated 900,000 kids in the new age range will have already gotten shots, the White House said the week of Nov. 8.
