Former President Donald Trump left a Manhattan courtroom “visibly angry” after being found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records, PBS NewsHour correspondent William Brangham reported Thursday.
After hearing the verdict, which made him the first former U.S. president to be convicted in a criminal trial, Trump shook hands with his son Eric Trump and left the courtroom. He stopped to talk to reporters outside, calling the trial “rigged” and “a disgrace.”
The verdict came as a sort of surprise: Jurors had recently asked Judge Juan Merchan to dismiss them for the day, but then returned to say they had reached a verdict.
The trial focused on payments made by Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen to cover up stories about the then-candidate that could be politically damaging during the 2016 presidential election.
