Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., questioned FBI Director Christopher Wray in a House Judiciary hearing Wednesday about the investigation into the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13 at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

When Cohen asked Wray how the FBI will ensure voter safety in the upcoming presidential election, Wray listed a variety of efforts, such as the Justice Department Election Threats Task Force and ongoing criminal investigations into threats toward election workers.

"There's been a number of types of threats to election workers, and these are, after all, people who are putting in their own time for the good of the country to try to help us have a functioning democracy, and so the idea that they would be targeted with violence is just outrageous," Wray said.

Earlier this week, the House Oversight Committee grilled Kimberly Cheatle, director of the U.S. Secret Service at the time of the deadly shooting. Members on both sides of the aisle called for her resignation and she announced Tuesday she was stepping down. Cheatle repeatedly referred lawmakers seeking details to the investigation being carried out by the FBI.
