Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, has died. She was 93.
Nominated in 1981 by President Ronald Reagan, O'Connor served on the high court for over 24 years before retiring. She was succeeded by Justice Samuel Alito in 2006.
Following her retirement, O'Connor advocated for civic engagement, judicial independence and the rule of law around the world. In 2009, then-President Barack Obama presented O'Connor with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
