A leading campaigner has criticised former prime minister Sir John Major after he said victims of the infected blood scandal had "incredibly bad luck".

Chair of the Haemophilia Society Clive Smith said comments by the ex-premier, who was in charge of the UK government from 1990 to 1997, were "offensive and complacent".

Giving evidence to a public inquiry into the healthcare catastrophe, Sir John described the growing sense in the late 1980s that compensation for haemophiliacs affected would be needed.

The inquiry continues today with Former Health Sec Virginia Bottomley giving evidence.
