Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, questioned FBI Director Christopher Wray in a House Judiciary hearing Wednesday about the investigation into the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13 at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Jordan asked Wray when the FBI learned that Iran was threatening Trump's life, referring to reports of a new warning from The National Security Council in the days before the attack. Wray responded that the Iranian government has been targeting prominent U.S. officials for some time — including against Trump as far back as his last administration in retaliation to the killing of Qasem Soleimani.
"I think that we need to recognize the brazenness of the Iranian regime, including right here in the United States, and I expect that we're going to see more of it, and I expect there'll be more coming on that. I'm not aware of any threat information related to protectees that wasn't passed in a timely way, but I can't really get into specifics here," Wray said.
Earlier this week, the House Oversight Committee grilled Kimberly Cheatle, director of the U.S. Secret Service at the time of the deadly shooting. Members on both sides of the aisle called for her resignation and she announced Tuesday she was stepping down. Cheatle repeatedly referred lawmakers seeking details to the investigation being carried out by the FBI.
