President Joe Biden said that while he believed his record, leadership and vision for the future “merited a second term,” it became clear to him in recent weeks that he needed to “pass the torch to a new generation” in order to protect democracy in America.

“There’s also a time and a place for new voices, fresh voices," Biden said in an address to the nation from the Oval Office Wednesday night. "And that time and place is now.”

It was Biden’s first public address since he ended his run for a second term in office and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.
