Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, spoke Feb. 10 as House Democrats made their case for why the Senate should convict former President Donald Trump on a charge of inciting insurrection during the attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump was impeached by the House in January, while he was still in office.

Castro focused on Trump’s apparent absence during the attack, pointing out that the former president tweeted several times in the hours before the insurrection but did not speak publicly about the attack until three and a half hours later. At that point, he tweeted a video asking the mob to go home, but continued to assert the election was stolen and told the mob, “We love you.”

“Senators, you’ve seen all the evidence so far and this is clear: On January 6th, President Trump left everyone in this Capitol for dead,” he said.

Castro and other House impeachment managers are making a case this week that Trump should be convicted on a charge of inciting insurrection during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump was impeached by the House in January, while he was still in office. Trump’s lawyers will also have a chance to defend the former president during the trial.
