FIFA has announced the 2026 World Cup host cities on Thursday, including Vancouver and Toronto as the Canadian locations.

President Gianni Infantino that holding the sporting event would be the "greatest celebration Canada has ever witnessed in its history."

Edmonton, Toronto and Vancouver were the three Canadian cities seeking selection, with a total of 22 candidate cities having pushed to stage matches for the expanded 48-team men's tournament that will be hosted by Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

FIFA Vice-President and CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani that the selection process for host cities of the 2026 World Cup was "very difficult" and that while Edmonton was not chosen as one of the Canadian locations to host, there will still be opportunities to "grab a piece" of the World Cup over the next years leading to the event.

The announcement of the cities were broken up into three regions.

Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Guadalajara, Mexico, were named the western region cities.

Kansas City, Missouri, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Mexico City and Monterrey, Mexico make up the central region host cities.

The eastern region then rounds out the host cities, with games set to be played in Toronto, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami, New York and New Jersey.

The U.S. will host 60 of the 80 games under FIFA's plan, including all from the quarterfinals on. There was also little doubt over the venues for 10 games each in the other nations.
