With the start of the new school year just weeks away, the safety of students and staff remains a top concern. Back in June Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbot signed a law aimed to enhance security in schools across the state. Now schools are mandated to add armed security guards and other safety measures. But many students and teachers across the state have rejected this law because it doesn’t address gun control. Texas’ gun laws have one of the more lax laws in the US, but with several of the most high profiled mass shootings in the country, some believe the state needs to fix the root cause. DW met students in Houston.
