US intel leak: Police arrest member of Air National Guard believed responsible

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Thursday that an employee of the Air Force National Guard had been arrested in connection to the ongoing probe into the leak of classified military documents.

"Today, the Justice Department arrested Jack Douglas Teixeira in connection with an investigation into alleged unauthorized removal, retention and transmission of classified national defense information," Garland told reporters who had gathered in Washington, D.C.

He said Teixeira was arrested without incident earlier that day, with aerial footage purporting to show the guardsman being detained by FBI authorities in Dighton, Massachusetts. According to reports, Teixeira is a guardsmen in the Massachusetts Air National Guard.

Department of Defense spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Pat Ryder said in a separate press conference that the leak was a "deliberate criminal act."

Among the leaks were purportedly related to Ukraine's military capabilities and shortcomings, as well as information about U.S. allies including Israel, South Korea and Turkey.
