Haiti's ambassador to the United States, Bocchit Edmond, provided an update Wednesday on the "terrible" assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse, saying that it's believed the act was carried out by well-trained mercenaries, based on a video in their possession. He also called on the U.S. to provide assistance in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Edmond was also asked about the status of the first lady, Martine Moïse, who was hospitalized following the attack which occurred in their home overnight. He said she was in stable, but critical condition and efforts were underway to take her to Miami, Fla. for further treatment.

"Thankfully she's alive, she's not dying as they have been saying," he said in reference to mixed reports.

The ambassador also spoke about the chain of command, saying while a prime minister had been named prior to the assassination because he was not in office yet, interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph assumed the role of acting president.
