U.S. aid programs to Niger’s federal government that have been indefinitely frozen amid the recent junta coup have been valued at more than $100 million, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Monday.
The pause — which Miller suggested would “go away” and be “reinstated” if military leaders “restore constitutional order” soon — was reportedly confirmed by U.S. State Secretary Anthony Blinken on Friday.
Miller confirmed that the announcement would not affect humanitarian aid to Nigerien people in need, but to various governmental programs, including development, security and law enforcement assistance.
The politician added that State Department officials have been in touch with Niger President Mohamed Bazoum, as well as junta leaders, adding that they’ve been urged to “step aside.”
