U.S. President Joe Biden said on Wednesday the U.S. would commit an additional $2.2 billion in funding to aid Ukraine in its war against Russia.

The deal includes equipment and contracts for ammunition as well as a Patriot missile battery “...as part of the ongoing effort to bolster Ukraine’s air defence,” Biden said.

Biden’s announcement came as Ukrainian Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a defiant wartime visit to Washington to thank U.S. leaders and “ordinary Americans” for their support in fighting Russia’s invasion and to press for continued aid.

The highly sensitive trip takes place after 10 months of a brutal war that has seen tens of thousands of casualties on both sides and devastation for Ukrainian civilians.
