During an unannounced visit to Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, on Saturday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, announcing new funding for the country as it struggles against the ongoing Russian invasion.

Trudeau revealed Canada will provide an additional $500M in military aid, while providing fighter pilot training for Ukraine’s armed forces. As well as that, Canada will provide 288 missiles to Ukraine and 10,000 rounds of ammunition.

On top of military aid, Trudeau said Canada is taking strong actions on “sanctions and economic measures.”

Lastly, the 51-year-old G7 leader addressed the tragic collapse of Ukraine’s Kakhovka dam, which took place earlier this week, causing mass flooding and subsequent evacuations in the country’s Kherson region — which is currently Moscow-controlled.

Both Ukraine and Russia have pointed fingers at one another, blaming their opponents’ for destroying the mammoth structure. It is currently unclear which side caused the collapse, if any.
