UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned Monday that commitments from the majority of countries on limiting greenhouse gas emissions would result in an increase of 16 per cent, rather than a decrease of 45 per cent by 2030. He warned that unless countries “collectively change course,” the upcoming UN climate summit, COP26, would be at high risk of failure.

Guterres’ comments come after an informal roundtable on climate action, to address major gaps on emissions targets and climate finance.

Guterres made an impassioned plea to leaders of industrialized, emerging economies and developing countries to take stronger action on climate change, adding, “everybody must do their job.”

He said countries cannot wait for others to act before doing their part.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke about his own country’s commitments to climate action, but also encouraged developing countries to move away from coal-powered energy, saying “you can do it.” At the same time he acknowledged the industrialized world’s role in creating the climate crisis.
