World leaders met at the United Nations for the first time in two years on Tuesday with an agenda of escalating crises to tackle, including the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S.-China tensions, Afghanistan’s future under its new Taliban rulers, and the relentlessly warming planet.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reprimanded the world for the inequitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines during his address, giving the globe an "'F in Ethics."

“This is a moral indictment of the state of our world. It is an obscenity. We passed the science test. But we are getting an F in Ethics," Guterres said.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro told the UN General Assembly he supported the COVID-19 vaccine and defended the use of an early treatment. He has long supported off-label use of hydroxychloroquine, taking it when he had contracted the coronavirus despite scientific studies finding it ineffective.

On climate change, Bolsonaro reinforced his government's commitment to eliminate illegal deforestation. The far-right leader, who has pushed to open more of the Amazon rainforest to mining and agriculture, has come under criticism for surging deforestation under his government.

U.S. President Joe Biden mapped out a new era of vigorous competition without cold war, promising restraint from the U.S. military and new commitments to cope with climate change.

Biden said that after promising in April to double U.S. international climate financing by 2024, his government would work with Congress to “double that number again,” which he said would help meet the UN goal of a $100 billion fund to support climate action in developing nations.
