As Russia has intensified its missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, international diplomats took to the UN Security Council on Friday to emphasize Russia’s departure from international norms.

Moscow stepped up its strikes last week, using missiles and loitering munitions to target Kyiv and major power and heating infrastructure in what Russian President Vladimir Putin said was payback for a Ukrainian attack on a bridge connecting Russia to Crimea.

“A new wave of bombardments has deliberately targeted critical national infrastructure, leaving some 30 per cent of Ukraine’s power stations damaged or destroyed. These were attacks on Ukrainian civilians’ way of life and they are a clear breach of international humanitarian law,” said James Kariuki, Deputy UK Ambassador to the United Nations.

At the meeting of the UNSC, UN rapporteurs surveyed the depths of the most recent damage.
